New track record in the Quillen, Foiled Again, Hypnotic Blue Chip prevail09/13/2010 8:19 PM - Many of the top older pacers in the sport took center stage at Harrington Raceway Monday to compete in the 4th Annual Bobby Quillen Memorial eliminations.
Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi and Jjk Stables’ Foiled Again ($2.60, Yannick Gingras) won the first division in a track record time of 1:50.3. The Dragon Again gelding took full advantage of the rail post position and set all the fractions, holding off a game Clear Vision, who finished second and third place finisher Blueridge Western. Solano finished fourth and advanced to next week’s $354,000 Final.
“He raced well tonight,” said Gingras, who piloted Foiled Again to a second in last year’s Quillen final. “We drew good tonight and he likes the front end, we got some good fractions into him and he’ll be ready for the final next week.” Foiled Again was one of four Burke-trained entrants in the Quillen.
Francis Azur’s Hypnotic Blue Chip ($6.00, Jody Jamieson) took the second division for trainer Kevin McDermott in 1:51.3. The 4-year-old Art Major stallion pulled second-over after the half-mile behind Pangiorno and pacesetter Mr. Wiggles set the pace. ‘Hypnotic’ surged three wide on the final turn as Mr. Wiggles began to give way while Won the West paced strongly up the passing lane. Won the West was game in defeat to finish second but Hypnotic Blue Chip sustained his charge to the wire to prevail by a head. Pangiorno was third, while Mr. Wiggles held fourth to earn his berth in next Monday’s final.
“He’s such a fast horse,” said Jamieson. “Kevin’s done a great job with him and he’s a pleasure to drive.”
Hypnotic Blue Chip was the first ever supplemental entry ($25,000) into the Quillen race.
In the overnight feature on the program, Lauren Allen’s Sniper Hall ($5, Mike Cole) was a runaway winner in the $20,000 Open in 1:52.2. |
