Rickshaw Rumble Sunday09/23/2009 10:45 AM - Rickshaw Rumble to Benefit Horse Lovers United, Inc. The annual Rickshaw Rumble to benefit Horse Lovers United, Inc (HLU), a non-profit horse rescue organization based in Salisbury, Maryland, will take place this Sunday, September 27th at Harrington Raceway in Harrington, Delaware. If you don’t know what a Rickshaw Rumble is, it’s a horse race without horses. Instead of our equine stars shining on the track, this is a competition where horsemen and women step between the shafts of a sulky. These “horses” go behind the Harrington Raceway starting gate and will pull fellow owners, trainers and family members in a race down the stretch of Harrington Raceway. There will be three Rickshaw Rumbles this year. The event for “fillies” will take place after the first race on the program with eight teams. A “mares” competition is a new competition this year and it’s for ladies of age 50 and older. This event is slated after the third regular race on the card and has six teams. The Rumble for “colts” will happen after the fifth race on the Harrington Raceway program and consists of eight teams. Each team has a sponsor that donates $100 to HLU. There are prizes for the winning teams and their sponsors. Members and volunteers of HLU will be selling “bets” to fans and horse people in the paddock. For a $2 “bet” (donation), anyone can try to pick the winning team in each Rumble. All those who pick correctly will have their name put into a big pot and one lucky winner will receive a great gift bag filled with prizes for each Rumble. HLU is also excited to announce that Harrington Raceway will give a $5 match play betting voucher to any fan that donates $5 to this 501(c) (3) organization that cares for and finds homes for retired racehorses. Post Time for Harrington Raceway’s Sunday card is 5:15 p. m. In addition to the Rickshaw Rumble events, HLU will be sponsoring the 11th race and presenting a blanket to the winning horse of that race.
