Foiled Again breaks own track record in Quillen finalBurke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi and Jjk Stables’ Foiled Again ($6, Yannick Gingras) prevailed in the 4th Annual $354,000 Bobby Quillen Memorial Final Monday at Harrington Raceway in a track record time of 1:50.1.
The Ron Burke-trainee sat in the pocket behind pacesetting Blueridge Western (Dan Dube) throughout, who set fractions of 26.3, 54.4 and 1:22.3. Won the West (David Miller), last year’s Quillen champ, sat on the outside throughout the mile and slowly gained ground, sustaining a hard fought bid. Won the West edged clear of the pacesetter at the top of the stretch, but Foiled Again tipped wide off cover late and surged through the stretch for the win. Won the West was second, while Clear Vision finished third.
“I want to thank everyone involved with the horse,” said Gingras of Foiled Again, whose lifetime earnings ballooned to more than $1.7 million. “I tortured him a few weeks and he wasn’t the same for a while. Tonight he was so sharp, I haven’t seen him like this since maybe in the Levy and they deserve a lot of credit.”
Last week Foiled Again set the track record of 1:50.3 before eclipsing that Monday.
“A completely different horse tonight,” said Gingras. “I told Ronnie (Burke) I didn’t think he was any good after last week. It’s terrible to say that about a horse that wins in 1:50.3 but he was tired finishing. I think last week did him a lot of good and he was vicious today. They did a great job.”
Second-choice Hypnotic Blue Chip had trouble from post seven and was outside most of the mile and finished sixth.
In the overnight feature on the program, Foulk Stables’ and Lauren Allen’s Sniper Hall ($4.20, Mike Cole) won his second straight $20,000 Open in 1:52.3. |
