Grandeur Seelster Scores Upset In Mares Open

George and Tina Dennis and Mark Stonesifer’s Grandeur Seelster ($82, Ross Wolfenden) was a long shot winner in the $18,000 Mares Open feature at Harrington Raceway Tuesday in 1:54.2.

The 5-year-old All Bets Off mare settled in third early in the mile behind pacesetter Square Deal through fractions of 28.2, 56.4 and 1:25.2. Designs On Your fanned wide from the pocket in the stretch and Grandeur Seelster charged down the inside for the upset win. Square Deal held second with Designs On You third in a blanket finish. Trained by Joe Columbo, it was her 2nd win of the year.

Long shots were prevalent on the card, as an 11th race dead heat between a pair of big prices Sea Princess ($74, Troy Beyer) and River Of Fear ($70.40, Justin Vincent) initiated some impressive payouts.

Trainer Joe Hunderptfund Jr. notched his 2000th career victory with Richard Ashley and Theresa Fallon’s Catch Some Sun ($13.40, Allan Davis). Hunderptfund Jr. is the current leading trainer at Harrington and has been one of the top conditioners on the Delaware circuit the last 20 years. It wasn’t long for him to win his 2,001st as Sugary Crunch (Beyer) prevailed in the 14th race.
