Speed Away Returns A Winner

Breakaway Racing and Yorwollohan Racing’s Speed Away ($4.60, Corey Callahan) returned to Harrington Raceway a winner in the $18,000 Open Trot Wednesday in 1:55.4.

The 7-year-old Father Patrick gelding had raced his prior two starts at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

Swan Flyer, last week’s winner, made the lead at the quarter-mile from Vlahos in 28.3 seconds. The field would remain mostly single file until the half-mile in 57.2 seconds with the outer flow quickly developing. Every Day Dan and Speed Away gained sharply on the outside to three-quarters in 1:26.3 before Speed Away surged three-wide on the final turn to swoop by the leaders for his 11th win over the track in the past two years. Swan Flyer held second with Not For Moni third. Trained by Nick Callahan, Speed Away has banked more than $50,000 seasonally in just eight starts, following up a banner 6-year-old season where he banked $147,670.

On the undercard, Sam Banks’ Lizzy Lauxmont ($9.60, Callahan) won her 2nd straight race in 1:56.2 in a $10,000 conditioned trot.

Callahan, Eddie Dennis and Ross Wolfenden each had driving doubles.
