Paul McDougall and WJ McDougall Racing's Broke As Usual A ($24.20, Ross Wolfenden) earned his first win of the year in upset fashion Wednesday in Harrington Raceway's featured $21,000 Junior Open Trot.
The 8-year-old Malhana Gindin gelding took advantage of an early speed duel between Vicki Gram and Jake's Nordic, who trotted to the half-mile in 56.3 seconds. Wolfenden and 'Broke' circled three-wide approaching three quarters and held off the Federalist and Self Content for the win. Trained by Peter Tritton, it pushed the Australian-bred's earnings to more than $330,000.
Later on the card, Harrington Raceway's winningest horse all-time, Bob Stevenson and Eric Davis' 14-year-old trotter Stormont Northstar ($11.20, Eddie Davis Jr.) earned his 68th career win, and 31st lifetime win on Delaware's half mile race track in 2:00.1.
Thursday July 3 marks closing night at Harrington until the track re-opens on July 24 for Governor's Day at the Delaware State Fair for one day of racing with a special 11 a.m. post time. The summer/fall meet will resume August 10 through October 23.
